THE GIG, rebuilt from what survived

THE GIG – The Great Indian Golchakkar ran from 5 to 7 February 2016 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, from noon to 10 pm, with ₹200 entry. It had three parts: food, music and crafts. Wire reports from IANS, PTI and ANI at the time described it as curated by Gourmet Planet. Sonny Walia was its curator, and I was partner and show runner.

None of them, alone, said what THE GIG was. Together they do.

How GPOS joined them

Keep what agrees. Follow what doesn't. Label everything as a fact, a pattern, a hypothesis, an unknown or a conflict, and show the source.

What the join found

An untitled video in the festival's Facebook archive.

An untitled video in the festival's Facebook archive turned out to be ANI's broadcast report from opening day. Its title card, watermark and running time of 4 minutes 8 seconds all matched. GPOS identified it and transcribed it.

1. The film nobody had labelled.

The official trailer: one of the three video files. Another was the untitled file.

Eleven sources give a date. They do not agree.

The deck, the website, the trailer, the ANI report and four press listings all put the festival on 5–7 February 2016. Three sources printed January. One of them was a wire preview that another paper ran correctly the next day. GPOS kept the eight and logged the three as a conflict. My own memory had it three days early.

2. Eight sources against three.

Our record listed no public video.

Our record listed no public video. A web search found one. Searching inside YouTube, channel by channel, found twenty-one: posted by people who were there, and one by Karsh Kale's own channel. Four called it "The Grub Carnival". Same uploader, same nights, same acts as the schedule, so GPOS joined them anyway.

3. From none to twenty-one.

Fifteen acts on a published schedule.

Six of the fifteen acts can be seen on those videos. Each act's first phone clip went up on the day of its slot on the published schedule, or the day after. So the schedule is not just what was planned. For those six acts, it is what happened. And every night's closing act is on video.

4. The schedule held.

Twenty-one public videos, and two of three parts.

Eighteen of the twenty-one videos are of the music, and nine of those are Papon's set. Food and crafts were two of the festival's three parts, but they are mostly in the press, not the footage. For a next edition that's a decision, not a footnote: the audience films the stage, so the food and craft stories need to reach it.

What GPOS still doesn't know

Footfall and ticket sales. No source has turned up, so the record says "unknown". GPOS doesn't guess.

What this means for your business

Your business has a GIG of its own: a project, a site, a customer or a year whose story is spread across a ledger, a WhatsApp group, the CA's file and somebody's memory. The method is the same. Gather what survived, join it, keep what agrees, follow what doesn't, and say plainly what you still don't know.
